Betsy DeVos: Businesswoman, Activist, & Philanthropist

Betsy DeVos was born in Michigan in 1958 and has a rich career as a businesswoman, philanthropist, and activist. She is well known for her work in the education system, focusing a lot of her time on charter schools, school voucher programs, and Detroit Charter School System.

Betsy DeVos started her career by becoming active in 1982 with the Republican Party. She has been elected for 16 separate 2-year terms in a row as the local precinct delegate for the Republican Party. She served from 1992 to 1997 as a Republican National committeewoman, as well as serving a chairwoman to the Michigan Republican Party from 1996 to 2000.

Betsy DeVos is excellent at fundraising and has personally raised over $100,000 in 2004 for former President Bush’s re-election campaign. In addition, she spent two years as the finance chairperson for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and has given over 17 million to various political figures and various political committees since early 1989.

Betsy DeVos, along with her husband founded Windquest Group in 1989, and this group is dedicated to investing in clean energy and technology. She is also a chief investor and serves on the board at Neurocore. Neurocore is a brain performance center and focuses on disorders like depression, anxiety, autism, and much more. In late November 2016, Betty DeVos was nominated for Secretary of Education. On February 7th, 2017 Betsy DeVos officially accepted the position of Secretary of Education. Since being appointed to the position, she has spoken at several colleges focusing on topics like financial aid and student loans.

Betty DeVos is a very active philanthropist, acting as chairperson for several groups and founding a few. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation has donated large sums to hospitals, health research, schools, and think-tanks. Between the late 1990s until 2014, the foundation had donated over 100 million to various causes. Dick and Betsy DeVos also founded an organization called ArtPrize. ArtPrize is an international art competition that operates out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She also founded and headed the organization All Children Matter, a program focused on school vouchers.

Betsy DeVos has been a fierce defender of education for years. She is a huge supporter of school vouchers, which allows students to attend private school on public funds, as well as charter schools.
