By then it was beyond doubt that the two men had been arrested and detained illegally. This was an infringement of their First Amendment rights. What followed was a prolonged legal scuffle that resulted in the infamous ruling in 2012 by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal. The decision outlined that the duo had been arrested without probable cause. In the end, the two journalists were compensated an amount totaling to 3.75 million dollars.
