Doug Levitt’s 13 Year Journey Continues with “The Greyhound Diaries”

“The Greyhound Diaries” art project created and continually updated by artist Doug Levitt has taken many twists and turns over the years, including the fact the project has taken on many different forms of appearance such as photographs, songs, a book, and spoken work forms of media. Doug Levitt did not set out on the project with the idea of it turning into a work that would continue for more than a decade; instead Doug set out to sign up voters for the 2004 Presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry by traveling by bus from his home in Los Angeles and found himself amazed by the level of poverty he discovered as he traveled across the U.S.

Doug Levitt had decided he would set out on a career as an artist after growing tired of his former position as an international correspondent for a number of major news networks; living in London at the time he decided on a career change the graduate of Cornell University and the London School of Economics began playing music in a local band and decided an artistic career was the direction he wished to move into and what Doug Levitt knows.

Caring for others is something Doug Levitt has seen his own family members consistently do as his mother is one of the best known politicians in Washington D.C. Doug has consistently looked to bring his performances of “The Greyhound Diaries“to the people who are living the life he is writing about and recording through images through performances at the Southern Poverty Law Center, and a range of different homeless shelters and soup kitchens across the country where Doug Levitt seeks inspiration for his work shining a light on inequality and poverty across the U.S.

Although he no longer needs to travel by bus, Doug Levitt continues to move around the U.S. seeking to discuss the lives of those he meets on each journey. The divisive nature of politics and religion mean most people Doug Levitt meets during his “The Greyhound Diaries” project wish to talk about themselves and reveal more about their true position in life than any staged interview could ever uncover and Doug’s lacrosse camp.
