These nonprofit organizations are protecting immigrants’ rights in a tumultuous time

Immigrants rights have come into the spotlight in 2017, with President Trump’s controversial travel ban, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policies, and pardoning Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio threatening to jeopardize the lives and rights of millions of documented and undocumented US immigrants.

Nation-wide there are hundreds of organizations dedicated to providing immigrants and their families with necessary support. Individuals and families seeking assistance can turn to local and national organizations for support and assistance. Learn more about Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin:

Below are 3 organizations that are making strides in every facet of migrant rights. A comprehensive list of immigrant aid organizations is also available at

American Civil Liberties Union: The American Civil Liberties Union or “ACLU” is well known for its civil rights work. This year, ACLU attorneys provided pro-bono legal services to immigrants detained at US airports under the travel ban.

The ACLU has been fighting legal battles for immigrants rights for more than 25 years. The national organization has offices in every state and can offer legal aid and advisement to immigrants and their families.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund: The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was founded by journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. Lacey and Larkin are co-founders of two media outlets in Phoenix, AZ: Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media.

The two were forcibly removed from their homes and jailed in October 2007 by then-sheriff Joe Arpaio after investigating a story about grand jury proceedings related to Arpaio’s illegal conduct. After suing the county for the violation of their First Amendment rights, the case escalated to the US Court of Appeals before Lacey and Larkin were awarded a $3.75 million settlement.

The settlement was used to establish the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund which supports civil rights and freedom of speech advocates in Arizona, which is estimated to have the third highest population of undocumented immigrants in the US.
